Your Ultimate Guide To The Kedarkantha Winter Trek
The Kedarkantha trek is a journey that every mountain lover should experience at least once in their lifetime. Nestled in the Uttarakhand region of India, this trek is a perfect blend of adventure, natural beauty, and serenity. I recently embarked on this trek, and it was an unforgettable experience that I’m excited to share with you.
Why Choose the Kedarkantha Trek?
Kedarkantha is known for its breathtaking views, pristine landscapes, and snow-clad trails. It’s one of the best winter treks in India, and here’s why:
- Suitable for Beginners: With a moderate difficulty level, the Kedarkantha trek is ideal for first-timers and those looking to step into the world of trekking.
- Stunning Views: The summit offers panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks like Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Black Peak.
- Cultural Touch: You get to pass through charming Himalayan villages, interact with locals, and experience their warm hospitality.
- All-Season Trek: Although winter is the most popular time, the trek is equally beautiful in other seasons with lush greenery and blooming flowers.
My Kedarkantha Trek Itinerary
Day 1: Drive to Sankri
The journey began with a long but scenic drive from Dehradun to Sankri, a small village and the base camp for the Kedarkantha trek. The drive took around 8-10 hours, passing through dense forests, winding mountain roads, and picturesque villages. Sankri itself is a quaint place with basic guesthouses and a market.
Day 2: Trek to Juda Ka Talab
On the second day, we started our trek from Sankri to Juda Ka Talab, a beautiful high-altitude lake. The trail was about 4 kilometers long and took 4-5 hours to complete. We passed through dense pine forests, open meadows, and small streams. Juda Ka Talab was partially frozen when we reached, surrounded by tall pine trees and offering a magical vibe.
Day 3: Trek to Kedarkantha Base Camp
The next day, we trekked to the Kedarkantha base camp. This part of the trail was relatively steeper but offered mesmerizing views of the snow-covered surroundings. It took us around 3-4 hours to reach the base camp, where we set up our tents. The evening was spent around a bonfire, sharing stories and soaking in the starlit sky.
Day 4: Summit Day
Summit day started early, around 3 AM, to ensure we reached the peak by sunrise. The trail was steep and covered in snow, making it challenging but equally rewarding. When we reached the summit, the views took my breath away. The rising sun painted the snow-clad peaks in hues of gold, and the sense of achievement was overwhelming.
After spending some time at the summit, we began our descent back to the base camp and then to Sankri.

My Favorite Moments
One of the highlights for me was witnessing the sunrise from the Kedarkantha summit. The golden light slowly illuminating the peaks was a sight I’ll never forget. Another favorite moment was camping under the starry sky, where the Milky Way was clearly visible. The peacefulness and connection with nature were beyond words. Read More
